This was our first service learning day and my group include Shad, Justin and I. We have talked a lot about what we are going to do but at this point nothing had really come up. Justin was looking into working with a guy his wife does some home health for us help out. That's as far as things are going for now.
I understand that working with a group and others around you are critical to being successful in most nursing careers. It is always interesting working with different people cause everyone usually has different ways of managing things. I am trying to look more from the outside as to may approach in how i can be the most helpful in a group when i know we all have other things on our minds and plenty to do.

#2 Cultural considerations/ Environmental factors/ Stress
This was one of the most interesting topics for me. Looking at how others view the world and what things effect others in different ways seems to always catch my attention. Everyone has different views and definitions of things. Trying to get everyone to understand each other is the hard part.
Understanding other people is a huge part of life especially when you are trying to help them with healthcare and what that might mean to them. There seems to be so many misunderstandings and problems between people with different ideas or backgrounds. Sometimes it's not always right but these problems can be humorous but as a nurse this has to be dealt with professionally. For example why someone may not want to accept some forms of western medicine may be really hard for me to understand.
Looking at environmental factors can be very small or really big depending on the situation. Education in this topic can be a huge factor making the difference between life and death.
As I progress in the future with my nursing career I am sure there will be a great need for me to understand others culture and viewpoints. Although I must be prepared to also have a hard time understanding and be willing to ask about things I do not know anything about.

#1 Nursing roles in Health promotion/ Therapeutic communication
There a many parts to being a nurse. Talking about the roles of nursing you can break the definitions of being a nurse into specific parts. Promoting health is a more of a broad topic that this class is breaking down into specific parts. A couple parts we talked about early on seem to be more fundamental such as therapeutic communication and building relationships.
Our book states that " health refers to the ability of persons to function effectively physically, socially, psychologically, and spiritually. In the context, effective physical functioning refers to the ability of the body structures to change and adapt, thus resulting in a positive health status." To help others reach their health goals communication is so important. If there is a disconnect there will be a problem in either the sender or the receiver in reaching the desired outcome.
Good communication can lead to empowerment which seems to be the one of the goals of health promotion or education. Making communication effective enough so that your helping others leads them to helping themselves will let you know if the communication is working. Having a good relationship with patients can make this easier and more effective.
Looking at my own skills there is plenty of room for improvement. I really enjoy forming new relationships and communicating with others. Judging how effective I am with my skills is different. I for sure care if I am good at promoting health and empowering others. This is crucial to me being a confident and successful nurse in the future.
